DHI

Developing Health and Independence exists to help people out of social exclusion, whether that be as a result of drug or alcohol dependency, homelessness, mental ill health, lack of employable skills, or as a result of a physical or learning disability. It offers a broad range of practical and emotional support services, including: information and advice, supported housing, counselling, employment skills and training opportunities, to name but a few.
Another vital part of our work is to provide a range of therapeutic and social activities. Whether through gardening, football, IT training, book clubs or other groups, clients can gain confidence, develop an interest and meet others to build a social life. For many, this can be vital for helping them turn their lives around.
The art group is one such activity that has proved hugely successful. The comments of the group members say it better than I can:
“Coming to the class is the only thing that has gotten me out of the house in a long time”;
“During the class I do not feel any pain, whereas usually I am in constant pain; and
“My experience in the group has had a calming effect on me - it has helped with my concentration and confidence”.
These comments are a demonstration of why the art group offers so much more to service users than just the art itself, and its success reflects the commitment of the tutor and DHI staff members in helping people to be part of society again.
